A TOTAL of RM5.9 million has been allocated for water rehabilitation projects at the pond area in Upcycle Park, Bandar Perda, and the Parit Monsun canal in Bandar Perda.

Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Baderul Amin Abdul Hamid said the primary objective is to restore and enhance water quality at both sites.

Baderul Amin said the primary objective is to restore and enhance water quality at both sites.

“The implementation of this special project is made possible through contributions and sponsorship from Micron Memory Malaysia Sdn Bhd, reflecting the ongoing commitment between the local council and the industrial sector to strengthen sustainable development, environmental stewardship and community well-being in Penang.

“The project will involve detailed construction planning, continuous monitoring and strict water quality control measures to ensure that treated effluent meets or exceeds the Water Quality Index (WQI) standards set by the Department of Environment Malaysia.

“This water rehabilitation initiative is also part of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) collaboration between MBSP, Micron Memory Malaysia and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), aimed at raising public awareness on the importance of water conservation and environmental sustainability.

“The sponsorship amount is based on projections that the project will achieve an estimated water recovery of approximately 3.3 million cubic metres annually, in line with recognised volumetric water benefit accounting principles,” Baderul Amin said before the programme was officiated by Penang Local Government and Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye at the MBSP headquarters in Bandar Perda, Bukit Mertajam today.

Ramu said the project demonstrates the power of collaboration between industry and local authorities.

“By restoring vital water resources, we are not only supporting communities today but also safeguarding their future.

“Water is a critical resource not just for industry, but for communities, biodiversity and future generations.

“River ecosystems, in particular, play a crucial role in urban resilience, climate change mitigation and public well-being.

“Micron is proud to contribute to this initiative and to stand alongside MBSP in advancing sustainability goals,” he said.

H’ng also commended Micron for its CSR efforts.

“The Penang government welcomes the implementation of such CSR initiatives across the state.

“Efforts like these reflect strong collaboration between government agencies, the private sector and academic institutions.

“MBSP is among the local authorities actively driving CSR projects, and this programme clearly demonstrates a meaningful partnership in raising public awareness on the importance of water conservation and environmental sustainability.

“This collaborative approach reflects a shared commitment towards inclusive and sustainable development,” he said.
