MPSP is ready for city status

EXCO for Local Government, Housing and Town & Country Planning Jagdeep Singh said at a press conference in the State Assembly today that the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) had completely fulfilled the requirements of attaining city status since 2008.

Elaborating on this, Jagdeep said there is an Act limiting only one city per state with city status, as Penang Island City Council (MBPP) had attained it several years ago.

“However, Selangor and Sarawak have more than one city in their respective state,” Jagdeep said.

Jagdeep added that Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow already signed the letter on city status for MPSP and now they going to submit the letter to Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

“We will follow up and consult the ministry on the city status for MPSP and we can then proceed once we get approval from them.”

MPSP was given a five-star rating in a report by the head of state audit Department in 2017 which was tabled in Parliament on Aug 6, 2018 under the Financial Management Auditing (Accountability Index).
