Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said construction works of the new basketball court were completed at a cost of RM147,400.

Chow said construction works of the new basketball court were completed at a cost of RM147,400.

“The construction works started in early last month and fully completed in September this month.

“The new basketball court is also equipped with new outdoor gym equipment.

“It is hoped that the new basketball court at Taman Tenang in Bukit Mertajam will help promote a healthy community here and spur interest, especially among the youths, to be active in sports,” Chow said in his speech before launching the new basketball court at Taman Tenang in Bukit Mertajam today.

Also present were Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim Chee Keong, Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee and Taman Tenang MPKK (Village Community Management Council) chairman Lee Sok Hong.

Regarding the request by the Taman Tenang residents to upgrade the current basketball court into a sheltered basketball court, Chow said it is a good suggestion and he would include it in the upcoming state budget.

“As a matter of fact, we hope we can upgrade every basketball court in the state into a sheltered basketball court but it will be done in stages as it involves a huge cost.

“Nevertheless, this is a good initiative because a sheltered basketball court can also serve as a venue for community activities besides basketball games,” he said.
