THE state government has always believed in the potential that lies within the Civil Defence Emergency Response Team (CDERT) squads in Penang to create a livable space for communities of various backgrounds, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said.

He said the demand for these emergency response teams is higher due to their efficiency in handling disasters and emergencies.

“There is a growing need for such units in the state. It is equally important that local communities prepare and act promptly when an emergency or disaster happens.

“The state sincerely hopes that local communities in the state will also come forward and join these CDERT units.

“In the event of a mishap, these teams will be there to assist before other relevant agencies such as the police and Fire and Rescue Department personnel arrive,” Chow said after officiating the new Paya Terubong community-based CDERT office in Lintang Paya Terubong 3 today.

The office is the second to be set up in the Paya Terubong state constituency.

Chow was delighted over the establishment of the new office and strongly encouraged the participation of the local community there to join and contribute to the betterment of everyone.

“We hope for more of such offices to be established across all the various state constituencies here,” he added.

On another matter, when asked by a reporter about the status of installing safety nets at the Penang Bridge as a short-term measure to curb suicide cases, Chow said the State Secretary recently held a meeting with relevant authorities, in which an announcement would be made soon.

Chow said it is more important for people to pay close attention to those who are suffering from mental health issues.

“The state is now focused on training more people to manage individuals who are facing mental health issues. Various talks have begun,” Chow added.

Meanwhile, state Civil Defence Force (APM) director Col. Ishak Mohd Radzi said more people must be equipped with essential skills that would be required during such unforeseen incidents.

Also present during the event was state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.
