THE Penang government has no plan to follow in Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) footsteps to ban the sale of liquor in convenience stores.

State executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari (PH-Tanjong Bunga) said the state did not have any plan to prohibit alcohol sale at the convenience stores.

He was responding to a supplementary question posed by Yusni Mat Piah (PAS-Penaga) whether the state authorities would follow DBKL’s decision to ban the sale of liquor which had begun in October this year.

“There is Road Transport Act 1987, which carries penalties for drunk drivers,” Zairil, the state transport and infrastructure committee chairman, said at the State Legislative Assembly session today.

He added that the state did not have any details on the number of liquor buyers.

“This is because there is no such regulation that mandates the buyers to register their particulars before buying liquor,” Zairil said.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Yusoff Mohd Noor (BN-Sungai Dua) asked Zairil if he was in favour of stricter enforcement and penalties imposed.

Zairil said he agreed on a stricter enforcement but emphasised that the power to impose harsher enforcement falls under the purview of the Federal Government.
