Overwhelming response for Mobile App and Web Dev competitions

ALMOST 1,000 participants from various schools in the country have participated in the first edition of the Mobile App Challenge and Web Dev Aspiring for Women Competition.

 

Organised by Tech Dome Penang (TDP), a total of 640 participants from over 70 schools took part in the Mobile App Challenge and another 213 participants from 22 secondary schools registered for the Web Dev Aspiring for Women Competition.

 

TDP hosted a prize-giving ceremony in Komtar on Aug 27 to award the winners.

 

The Mobile App Challenge and Web Dev Aspiring for Women Competition were held in February and May consecutively this year.

 

TDP chief executive officer Khoo Boo Wooi said the objectives of both competitions were to give students the most recent technological expertise and skills.

“And the ultimate aims are to build the interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and promote creativity among these young contestants.

 

“After all, digital literacy is one of the priorities for Tech Dome Penang.

 

“Digital literacy means having the skills needed to live, learn, and work in a society where communication and access to information are acquired through digital technologies like internet platforms, social media, and mobile devices.

 

“This is a very important skill, especially in the 21st century.

 

“Tech Dome Penang does not only focuses on the lower hierarchy of digital literacy which helps the students to understand and use technologies, but we are also building their interest in technologies such as through these competitions,” Khoo said in his speech during the prize-giving ceremony for both competitions yesterday (Aug 27).

 

Also present was Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy.

“I am happy to note the overwhelming response in both competitions.

 

“These competitions help students to gain more knowledge regarding the latest technologies. They are an ideal platform for students to improve themselves.

 

“I hope that Tech Dome Penang will always be the most inquisitive place for the youths and students to cultivate interest in STEM, and to pursue careers as future technologists,” he said.
