Penang addresses climate crisis, buildings become greener

THE Penang government strives to turn more buildings under the state administration green to address the climate crisis.

 

State Local Government, Housing, Town, and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the solar panels had been installed on three buildings under Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP).

 

Jagdeep speaking to the reporters.

 

“The buildings are Bertam Sports Complex, Jalan Betek Sports Complex and MBSP branch office in Jalan Betek.

 

“Meanwhile, four premises under the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) have been identified for installing solar panels. The buildings identified are the MBPP enforcement and control centre in Jalan Timah, Relau Sports Complex, MBPP Vector and Veterinary Services Centre and Bayan Baru Market and Bayan Baru Market Complex,” he told a media conference at the MBPP enforcement and control centre in Jalan Timah, Relau Sports Complex today.

 

A total of 222 solar panels have been installed at the MBPP enforcement and control centre.

Jagdeep said the installation and maintenance of the solar panels at the four premises under MBPP were borne entirely by Ditrolic Sdn Bhd under a 25-year contract.

 

“The MBPP is expected to save up to RM330,000 in electricity bills per year,” he said.

 

Local council division secretary Nur ‘Aishah Md Norodin said plans to install solar panels at the north, central and south Seberang Perai district offices, as well as the southwest district office, were in the pipeline.

 

Also present were MBPP senior engineer (mechanical and electrical) Othman Abdul Latiff and Tenaga Nasional representative Abdul Manan Abdul Rahman.
