A TOTAL of 54 teams from more than 11 countries and regions are set to compete in the Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta 2025, which will be held this weekend at the scenic Straits Quay Retail Marina.

The regatta will run from Nov 28 to 30, between 8am and 4pm daily.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said this year marks the second consecutive edition of the regatta at Straits Quay.

Wong said this year marks the second consecutive edition of the regatta at Straits Quay.

“It is a venue that offers unobstructed views of the racecourse, convenient access to food, retail, and family-friendly activities, and an electric atmosphere that transforms the waterfront into a vibrant hub of excitement.

“Last year, we were thrilled by a strong turnout of spectators, and we are expecting an even greater response this year as the regatta continues to grow in prestige and scale,” Wong told a press conference in Komtar today.

Wong said the overwhelming number of participating teams reflects the regatta’s status as one of Penang’s most diverse and internationally recognised sporting events.

“This year’s participants include teams from Australia (three teams), China (15 teams, including 10 from Hong Kong), Singapore (seven teams), Japan (one team), Thailand (one team), Brunei (one team), the Philippines (one team), Liechtenstein (one team), Chinese Taipei (four teams) and Malaysia (20 teams),” he said.

According to Wong, the strong international presence highlights both the regatta’s rising global reputation and Penang’s appeal as a destination for world-class sporting events.

“This diversity spanning Southeast Asia, Australia, and Europe underscores Penang’s position as a hub for international cultural and sporting activities.

“Each team brings its own skill, passion, and dedication. Together, they will deliver a thrilling competition that will captivate both local and international spectators. In total, more than 1,600 participants are expected,” he added.

Wong emphasised that the regatta is more than a sporting contest.

“It is a celebration of culture, teamwork, and community. We invite Penangites, Malaysians from across the country, and international visitors to join us, cheer for the athletes, and soak in the festival atmosphere along the waterfront.

“This is a family-friendly event, a showcase of heritage, and a testament to Penang’s growth as a destination for global events,” he said.
