THE Penang government remains committed to encouraging more Penangites to use public transport instead of private vehicles to reduce traffic congestion in the state.

State Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said this was proven with various initiatives introduced by the Penang government in collaboration with Rapid Penang for that purpose.

“Among those initiatives taken are by allocating subsidies for the MY50 Mutiara pass programme, CAT Bridge free bus service, CAT George Town free bus service, Komtar stop-and-go bus services and Bridge Express Shuttle Transit (BEST) and free ferry ridership programme for pedestrians.

“We also provide stop-and-go bus services throughout the state with the most optimal service.

“The state government continues to improve public transport service by increasing efficiency and comfort. Infrastructure facilities such as new terminals, hubs and bus stops with roofs have been built and the existing ones are being upgraded in stages.

“These are some of the initiatives introduced by the Penang government to encourage the use of public transport in the state,” Zairil told the State Legislative Assembly today.

Zairil (PH-Tanjong Bunga) said this in response to an oral question by Ong Ah Teong (PH-Batu Lancang) who wanted to know the state government’s efforts to encourage more Penangites to use public transport to reduce traffic congestion.

“The state government will continue to encourage more people to use public transport,” he said.
