Penang govt rewards UEC high achievers

THE Penang government today has given a total of RM40,800 as an incentive to 51 Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) outstanding local students from various schools.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who handed out RM800 to each of them, praised them for their remarkable achievement in scoring 7As and above last year.

“This is the fourth year that the state government has commended the UEC outstanding students.

“A special tribute to all those involved in cultivating such outstanding talents.

“We hope that everyone of you will return to serve Penang after completing your studies as we focus on promoting electrical and electronics, machinery and equipment, medical technology and other advanced fields.

“We need a strong industry ecosystem and talent pool to solidify Penang’s position in the global value chain,” he said in his speech before presenting the monetary incentive to the UEC students in Komtar today.

The 51 students, who were rewarded for their success, are from Chung Ling Private High School, Jit Sin Independent High School, Han Chiang Independent High School and Penang Chinese Girls’ Private High School.

Chow said one can have a career and life balance in Penang, whether in a working environment or starting a business.

“The state is one of the most liveable cities in the country and even the globe,” he said.

He also advised the students to strive hard for their dreams and always value the parents’ and teachers’ sacrifices.

The Penang Chinese and Mission Schools Affairs Coordinating Committee chairman Chong Eng expressed her gratitude to the state for rewarding the students.

“During the pandemic, many of the students were studying virtually and it has become a challenge for most of them.

“They have still managed to achieve great results despite the obstacles. A special thanks to the teachers for playing a pivotal role as well,” said Chong Eng, who is also the state non-Islamic Religious Affairs and Social Development Committee chairman.

Dong Zong vice-chairman Lee Thiam Lim thanked the state for the reward and recognition given to the students.

Among those present were Chow’s political secretary Teh Lai Heng, Bukit Bendera MP Wong Hon Wai, Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee and Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi.
