THE Penang government has officially launched a dual-pronged strategy to elevate durian tourism in the state, blending traditional outreach with digital innovation.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the initiative includes the release of an updated Penang Durian Brochure, thoughtfully curated to guide visitors to the island’s top farms, signature varieties, and immersive orchard experiences.

“In addition to the printed brochure, which visitors can conveniently carry and refer to throughout their journey, we are also fully embracing digital platforms to promote Penang’s durian tourism experience in a more comprehensive way.
“Complementing the brochure, the Penang Global Tourism (PGT) has produced a new six-episode video series that captures the full journey of Penang durians from their rich heritage and natural environment to cultivation practices and, ultimately, the tasting experience.
“Through these episodes, we invite the world to experience not just the fruit, but the stories, people and traditions behind it,” Wong added during his speech at the launch of Penang Durian Season 2026 at Komtar Walk today.

Among those present were Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng, PGT chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan, Malaysian Association of Hotel (MAH) Penang chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh and Ministry of Tourism and Culture (MOTAC) Penang director Dr Annuar Mohamed.
To further enhance the visitor experience, Wong said the state has also introduced the Penang Travel Deals – Durian Series, a collection of curated packages designed to make durian exploration seamless and accessible.
“These packages feature farm visits, hotel promotions and transportation bundles, making it easier than ever for visitors to enjoy Penang’s durian season,” Wong said, noting that the initiative is part of preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026.
He added that the state is targeting both domestic and international markets, with a strong focus on China, where demand for premium durians continues to surge.

“With improved connectivity and sustained promotional efforts, we are confident that Penang will further strengthen its position as a leading durian destination in the region,” he said.
Wong also emphasised that Penang’s durian season offers more than just a culinary delight.
“It is an invitation to connect with our land, our people and our heritage. On behalf of the state government, I extend my sincere appreciation to all partners, farmers and stakeholders for their unwavering support in making Penang a truly unique, world-class destination.
“I warmly welcome both local and international visitors to embark on a fragrant journey of durian indulgence here in Penang,” he said.
