PENANG will await a decision by hosts Selangor and the Ministry of Youth and Sports regarding the staging of the 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma) in August, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He noted that a decision is necessary following a proposal by the Sultan of Selangor to postpone Sukma 2026 until the conflict in the Middle East subsides and the Shah Alam Stadium renovation is fully completed.
Sultan Sharafuddin also highlighted the high costs involved in hosting the multi-sport event.
When asked to comment on the fate of Sukma 2026 after launching the BE Associate Programme at St Giles Wembley Hotel in Penang, Chow said the decision ultimately rests with Selangor and the Ministry.
“We will monitor developments closely, as our athletes are now in the final stage of preparations. With Sukma scheduled for August and May approaching, we are already in the final lap,” he said.
Sukma 2026, slated to be held in Selangor from Aug 15 to 24, is expected to feature 474 events across 37 sports.
