SOME 320 Silambam athletes from across the world are set to throng Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang to participate in the International Silambam Championship 2026 from July 31 to Aug 2, courtesy of a collaboration between the Penang Silambam Association, International Silambam Federation, and the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP).
From the 320 athletes, it was learned that 80 participants are from Penang. Apart from the athletes, 30 coaches and team managers, 40 technical officials, 15 technical assistants, and 40 volunteers, will also be present throughout the three-day championship.
The participants, besides those from Penang, hail from India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Borneo, and Myanmar.
State Youth, Sports, and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the Silambam championship is not merely a sports competition but a sports affair that brings together athletes from different parts of the world, promotes cultural exchange, encourages youth development, and strengthens international friendship through sport.
“The Penang government believes that sports unite people regardless of race, religion, and nationality. Sports also inspire healthy lifestyles, build character, and create opportunities for young people to achieve excellence.
“Hosting this championship will also benefit Penang by boosting tourism, hospitality, and local businesses.
“At the same time, visitors can experience our rich multicultural heritage, famous food, and warm hospitality. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to explore Penang during your stay,” Gooi told a press conference held in Komtar today.
He also congratulated the Penang Silambam Team for its continuous achievements, while wishing them the best for the upcoming 22nd Malaysia Games (Sukma 2026).
Meanwhile, International Silambam Federation deputy president and Malaysia Silambam Association president, Dr M. Suraess, thanked the Penang government and MSNPP for their continuous trust and faith in the Silambam athletes, as this gives a boost for all of them to perform at their highest level possible.
“We are grateful to the Penang government, MSNPP, and the Penang Silambam Association for their strong support in making this international tournament a success.”
“We hope this tournament can be held annually, whether in Penang, other states or even other countries, to ensure the continued growth of Silambam.”
“Our goal is to promote Silambam across Southeast Asia and eventually see the sport featured in the SEA Games and Asian Games,” said an enthusiastic Suraess.
Public are welcomed witness the championship as admission is free for all during the three-day event at USM.
Also present earlier were International Silambam Federation technical chairman Raveendran Poongavanam, Penang Silambam Association president Vejiyenthran, and others.
