THE welfare and interest of the Indian community have always been looked at by the Penang government, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow said the state, through the Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB), has constantly ensured the betterment of the community.

“For example, about 2.3 acres of land in Bandar Baru Air Itam has been earmarked for the construction of a Tamil primary school.

The state-level Ponggal celebration organised by PHEB.

“About four acres of land in Bagan Dalam, Butterworth, has also been earmarked for such purposes.

“This shows that the state has been supportive and assisting the Indian community in Penang,” he said in his speech after attending the state-level Ponggal celebration at Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB) today.

Chow commended the country’s multiculturalism which has been a pillar of a harmonious society.

“We are proud that Malaysia has different ethnicities.

The state-level Ponggal celebration gets livelier in PHEB.

“We can speak multi-languages here and this is one of our strong points when abroad,” he said.

Chow expressed his hope for a harmonious environment among all people.

Among those present were Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy, Jelutong MP R.S.N. Rayer, Bagan Dalam assemblyman M. Satees, and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) councillor David Marshel.
