IF all goes well, the construction of the proposed Penang Hill cable car project is expected to begin in the second quarter of next year, says Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) general manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng.

He said PHC was finalising some technical aspects of the project.

“These include the necessary Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), and the alignment of the pylons along the site.

“The safety aspect is utmost important as the design of the project must in line with the necessary requirements and international standards.

“We expect all these preliminary works to take place for up to a year before work for cable car project starts after obtaining the necessary approvals,” he said after attending the launching of wall art in Penang Hill Lower Station today.

Cheok said they were also getting the ideas of how cable car projects in other foreign countries are being conducted.

“In fact, the experts from Switzerland and Austria will be coming here next week. They have been tasked to look after the alignment of the cable car project,” he said, adding that the project is expected to take around two years to complete.

The cable car project is set to attract hordes of local and foreign tourists.

Also present during the press conference were Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng, who is also Bagan MP, and Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng.
