THE villagers of Kampung Manis can now look forward to a brighter future as plans for a more conducive housing environment are underway, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced.

“In the next two weeks, we are arranging for Railway Asset Corporation (RAC) to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Penang Housing Board (LPNPP) to jointly redevelop this piece of land.

“RAC is the landowner of Kampung Manis. Over 300 families are residing in Kampung Manis.

“Five developers have submitted their Requests for Proposal (RFP), and we will provide more information in the coming weeks.

“With the redevelopment project set to begin, we hope the residents can finally have a home that is comfortable and conducive,” Chow said after attending the Deepavali celebration at Shan Children’s Home in Perai today.

Chow expressed gratitude for Perai assemblyman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu’s effort.

“His appointment as the state Housing and Environment Committee chairman came at the right time.

“When I became the Batu Kawan MP after the last general election, I knew I needed to address the long-standing issue of Kampung Manis,” he said.

Perai, Bukit Tengah and Bukit Tambun are state constituencies under the Batu Kawan parliamentary constituency.

At Shan Children’s Home, Chow praised the staff’s dedication and commitment. From its humble beginnings with four children, the home has now grown to accommodate 43 children (23 boys and 20 girls).

He then announced an RM10,000 contribution from his Batu Kawan parliamentary constituency allocation, hoping it would assist in renovating and providing better facilities for the children.

“Datuk Seri Sundarajoo is also working tirelessly to resolve another housing-related issue at Kampung Main Road on the mainland,” he mentioned.

In response to inquiries regarding possible oil royalties following Petronas’ exploration of the hydrocarbon potential in the Langkasuka Basin, Chow explained: “Petronas is presently surveying the hydrocarbon potential across the rivers of the three states, and it’s premature to make any comments at this stage.”
