Recognising our culinary talents

A GROUP of young chefs from Penang who were sent to compete in the Ningbo International Young Chefs Challenge 2018 by the Penang Chefs Association (PCA) did the state proud by returning home with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the several categories which they took part in.

 

The competition, which took place on Oct 25 & 26 at the Ningbo Pre-Vocational College, had the full support of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of Zhejiang Province as well as the endorsement of the World Association of Chefs Societies (WorldChefs).

 

“Our team from Penang with another from Kuala Lumpur jointly represented Malaysia in the competition as part of the invited international teams. Other international teams which were invited to compete were from Australia, the US, India, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Cambodia, Mongolia, South Korea and Singapore. The contestants competed under 4 categories namely Two to Tango, Farm to the Plate, Ningbo Seafood Challenge and Cold Display and the top winner of each category was awarded with a trophy,” Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told the media when he met the Penang team on Dec 5.

 

Also present during the press conference were exco members Chong Eng (Women and Family Development, Gender Inclusiveness and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs) and Yeoh Soon Hin (Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture & Arts), assemblymen Joseph Ng (Air Itam), Heng Lee Lee (Berapit), Chris Lee (Pulau Tikus), Teh Lai Heng (Komtar) and H’ng Mooi Lye (Jawi) as well as PCA president Audee Cheah, immediate past PCA president Peter Chan, secretary-general Thomas See, director of competition Darren Tan, Penang Junior Chef Club chairman Yeap Thean Su, team manager Khor Ying Jia and rookie judge Chuah Lay Yen.

 

Our Penang culinary talents – all aged below 25 – who met Chow and had their photo session with the chief minister were Khoo Shu Xin & Yeoh Chai Ni (Silver Medal and Trophy for Overall 2nd Runner-up) and Kelly Lim Wan Chen & Yeoh Tzun Ming (Silver Medal) under the Two to Tango Category while in the Individual Competition, Kelly Lim Wan Chen won Gold medal, Khoo Shu Xin and Yeoh Chai Ni won Silver medals and Yeoh Tzun Ming won Bronze medal.
