WHILE they may no longer hold positions within the civil service in Penang, their noteworthy contributions during their tenure remain unforgettable.

Datuk Mohd Sayuthi Bakar, who previously served as the State Secretary, as well as former state executive council (exco) members Phee Boon Poh, Chong Eng, and Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain, have now been honoured with the title ‘Dato Seri’ (DGPN) each.

Similarly, Dr Norlela Ariffin, Yeoh Soon Hin, and Soon Lip Chee have received the ‘Dato’ title (DSPN) each.

During the state investiture ceremony held at Dewan Sri Pinang on Oct 14, Boon Poh expressed his deep appreciation for being awarded the ‘Dato Seri’ title. He dedicated this recognition to his family, friends, colleagues in the civil service, and party members.

The ongoing ceremony marks the celebration of the Penang Governor’s 74th birthday. Boon Poh emphasised that his achievements during his time in the exco were made possible by the support of the remarkable people around him.

Chong Eng.

He stated: “I may have retired in ‘name,’ but my heart remains committed to the people, and I will continue to offer my expertise wherever it is needed. As the former Sungai Puyu assemblyman, where I have served for almost three decades, I will continue to support my daughter, Phee Syn Tze, who currently serves as the assemblyman there.”

Boon Poh, a key figure in the administration since Pakatan Harapan’s tenure in the Penang government, previously led the Welfare and Environment portfolio.

Meanwhile, Chong Eng, who formerly held the Social Development and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs portfolio, expressed her gratitude to the Penang Governor and the state government for bestowing upon her the ‘Dato Seri’ title. At 66 years old, Chong Eng remains eager to work and is dedicated to contributing to society. She passionately urged the Penang government to focus on implementing policies and initiatives that promote active ageing in the state.

Chong Eng emphasised the importance of mental preparedness for retirement and the need for programmes that encourage active ageing, as individuals are often valued based on their contributions to their respective fields.

She stressed the potential challenges that could arise in the absence of a stable income during retirement.
