THE road upgrading works that are currently happening at the Macallum interchange of the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway are expected to be completed by the middle of April this year.

Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the upgrading project that has started since November last year is vital to improve the soil sediment structure of the road.

“At the moment, the work progress is at 58 percent and the length of the affected road is about 250 metres.

“The cost of the road upgrading project is RM1.6 million and fully borne by IJM Land Berhad.

“So, I hope road users can understand the situation and be patient during this period while waiting for the project to be completed.

“After all, it is for their own convenience and safety when using the road,” Gooi told reporters during his visit to the site today.

Also present were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Engineering Department director Rajendran Anthony and IJM Land Berhad senior general manager (northern region) Datuk Toh Chin Leong.

According to Rajendran, a total of 14 resurfacing works have been conducted by MBPP since 2004 until now at the Macallum interchange.

“However, the soil sediment problem is still happening and it could pose a threat to road users.

“Thus, in order to solve this problem, MBPP has asked IJM Land to do the road upgrading works and they agreed to it.

“They will use a concrete slab and other special materials to reduce the soil sediment problem and prevent it from happening too often.

“And we think that is the best way for now to solve the issue,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gooi thanked both MBPP and IJM Land for stepping forward and taking appropriate action to solve the issue.
