Run for a good cause

AVID runners can be effective advocates for cancer patients and survivors by taking part in the Warriors in Purple 2019 Night Run.

The organiser of the event, Gleneagles Penang, will be hosting the run from 6pm to 11pm on Nov 2 to mark the National Cancer Survivors Day.

Gleneagles Penang chief operating officer Yong Zi Ling said the purple awareness ribbon is often used to raise awareness for cancer.

She said the word ‘Warrior’ symbolised the brave people who have fought, and who are still fighting cancer.

“That was how we came up with the ‘Warriors in Purple’ event – a 7km cancer awareness run to celebrate all cancer survivors.

“The theme for this year’s annual run event is ‘Glow with Hope’. It sets the stage for an electrifying night.

“It is also an evening for us to appreciate precious moments in life. The memorable event is dedicated to the patients and their families whom we had the privilege to care for.

“Each kilometre of the run represents each day of the week. We want you to know that we are with you every day,” she told a press conference at the hospital on Sept 17.

Yong said that Gleneagles Penang is proficient at providing world class treatment and care for cancer patients.

“I believe that practising a healthy lifestyle is important to prevent and lower the risk of cancer.

“This 7km run event will be a good start towards getting participants healthier and fitter,” she added.

She encouraged people of all ages to take part in the programme, in support of the cancer patients and their caregivers.

The night run will be held at the Esplanade.

There will also be a food carnival and a Zumba dance at the event.

Registration fee is RM48. The run is limited to 1,500 participants only. The closing date is Sept 30.
