HAVING evolved into one of the region’s most prestigious sporting events since its inception in 1986, the Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) will kick off in the maturing township of Batu Kawan this year.

Called the Aspen-Klippa Penang Bridge International Marathon 2024, this year’s marathon, which will take place on Dec 15, will feature the collaboration of Aspen Group and Ikano Centres (Klippa Shopping Centre) with the Penang government.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed anticipation for this year’s runners, promising them a refreshing experience with a new route.

He hopes they would relish the opportunity to breathe in the ‘fresh air’ while tackling the scenic path, departing from the traditional route along the first Penang Bridge.

“Every year, the marathon entices participants worldwide, not just for the race’s challenge but also to indulge in Penang’s lively culture and stunning vistas.

“In this year’s edition, we aim to surpass expectations with a target of up to 30,000 participants.

“This ambitious goal underscores our dedication to broaden the marathon’s influence, inviting both seasoned athletes and novices to partake in the excitement of this iconic event.

“The state expresses sincere gratitude to Aspen and Klippa for joining forces, and I am filled with optimism that this partnership’s unveiling will not only enhance the event’s prestige but also create a lasting impact on our state’s socioeconomic landscape,” Chow told a media conference in Komtar today.

The marathon will kick off at the Aspen Vision City Sales Gallery, traversing the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (second Penang Bridge) before concluding in Batu Kawan.

Early bird registration fees remain consistent with last year’s rates, offering a full marathon at RM120, a half marathon at RM110, a 10km Open Category at RM100, and a 10km Junior Category at RM70.

Regarding logistics, state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai announced that the Penang government would fast-track shuttle services to support runners from both the island and the mainland.

Key locations like Queensbay Mall, Icon City, and Batu Kawan Stadium have been designated as primary pickup points to aid participants requiring transportation.

More details regarding logistics will be provided at a later date.

Previously, Wong also emphasised that comprehensive details about the marathon would be included in the official running guidebook to ensure participants are thoroughly informed and adequately prepared for the event.

Furthermore, Chow, who also serves as the Batu Kawan MP, reassured prospective runners that the expanding town boasts ample open spaces for parking numerous cars.

“Batu Kawan offers numerous parking facilities, along with promising accommodation options, particularly with a range of hotels in areas like Bukit Mertajam, catering to visitors from outside Penang,” he said.

Also present earlier were Aspen Group chief financial officer Lim Soo Aun and Ikano Centres managing director Adrian Mirea.
