RESIDENTS in the Bagan Jermal state constituency have the Penang government to thank after their sepak takraw court has been upgraded while plans are afoot to upgrade a drainage system as well.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was on his ‘Jelajah ❤️ Penang’ programme at the Bagan parliamentary today, was glad to see the sepak takraw court near the flats in Jalan Mohd Saad, Bagan Jermal had been upgraded.

The cost incurred was RM42,000, which comes under the state’s allocation for sports development.

The upgrading works commenced on March 21 and ended on May 16 this year. The works included solar panels and welded mesh fence that were installed at the court.

Chow had also spent his brief time playing sepak takraw with some of the youths during his visit to the new court.

On another visit, Chow and his ‘Jelajah ❤️ Penang’ delegation also inspected the plan by the local authorities to upgrade a drain near Taman Mas apartment.

The drain would be upgraded to a concrete one, which is estimated to be 150 metres long.

Chow hoped the completion of the drainage system would solve some of the erosion issues in the neighbourhood.

Among those present were Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng and Bagan Jermal assemblyman Soon Lip Chee.

Earlier, Chow and his entourage had a great time taking part in the Zumba dance together with some 200 residents at the recreational park at Taman Riang in Butterworth.

Chow said the recreational park at Taman Riang is among the earliest recreational parks in the state that is equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTVs).

“This is because we want the people here to feel safe conducting their healthy activities such as jogging. We’ll continue to monitor the place.

“A few upgrading works, such as jogging track, installation of exercise equipment and 16 LED lights, have also been conducted over the years at this recreational park to ensure the safety of the residents here,” he said.

Chow and his entourage also visited the basketball court at Taman Bagan in Butterworth.

Joining Chow were Lim, Soon and Bagan Dalam assemblyman Satees Muniandy.

Chow handed over 40 sets of jerseys to the Seberang Perai Utara Basketball Association.

He said the state government is open to working closely with the association regarding its plan to organise various programmes in Seberang Perai Utara to attract more talents and interest in basketball from the non-Chinese community.

“We will take note of the suggestion from the Seberang Perai Utara Basketball Association vice-president Tan Chee Leong and get in touch again on how we can collaborate further on the matter,” he said.
