THE Penang government has spent a total of RM240.3 million on housing maintenance projects from 2008 until February this year.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the amount includes public housing maintenance schemes (RM184.3 million), state’s Housing Maintenance Maximum 80% Fund (TPM80PP) (RM34 million), and also the maintenance schemes under both local councils (RM22 million).

“The maintenance projects focus on various facilities such as lift replacements, repair works on roofs, railings, wiring, pipes and many others.

“Thus, this shows the state government’s commitment in taking care of the people’s welfare,” Jagdeep told reporters after witnessing two units of lift replacement at Ampang Jajar PPR flats in Permatang Pauh today.

Also present was Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) mayor Datuk Rozali Mohamud.

Apart from that, Jagdeep also announced RM700,000 allocation for Ampang Jajar PPR flats.

“The allocation will include the repairing work of the piping system, wiring works, the installation of the new fire extinguishers, closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and others.

“This allocation will surely bring better comfort to the 686 residents of this PPR.

“From 2008 until the end of last year, more than RM6.7 million allocation has been provided by the state government for maintenance works at Ampang Jajar PPR flats.

“Thus, I hope the residents here will always take care of the facilities provided for them and take measures to ensure these are not damaged,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rozali said MBSP would carry out 15 housing maintenance projects this year under the federal Malaysia Home Maintenance Fund (TPPM).

“The total cost is about RM3.3 million. We expect the maintenance projects to start in stages sometime in June.

“Hopefully, this will improve the living standards and bring better comfort to the people in Seberang Perai,” Rozali added.

Earlier in January this year, the Housing and Local Government Ministry has approved 45 housing maintenance projects in Penang at a cost of RM17.89 million.
