State govt to continue assisting Christchurch attack victims

THE Penang government will continue to do its best in assisting the three Christchurch terrorist attack victims although its representatives have flown back to the state.

Speaking to reporters after touching down at the Penang International Airport (PIA) tonight, state Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said state would monitor the victims’ condition from time to time.

He told the media that the trio, who hail from Penang, Kedah and Kelantan, were being warded and in stable condition.

The three victims, currently undergoing treatment at the Christchurch Hospital are Rahimi Ahmad, Mohd Tarmizi Shuib and Mohd Nazril Hisham Omar.

Phee also lauded on the New Zealand government’s commitment in helping the victims involved in the attack.

“The victims’ well-being and condition remain a priority. We are satisfied with the treatment given to them,” he said.

Phee also dismissed a news report that claimed there was not much assistance rendered by the authorities, describing it as totally untrue.

This comes after a report stating family members of the victims are frustrated over the lack of assistance.

Phee said the New Zealand and Malaysian governments have been helpful by doing their best.

“For instance, NZ$3,000 (around RM8,382) allocation from Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng will be given to each of the victims’ family,” he said.

Phee and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz flew to Christchurch to provide assistance soon after learning about the attacks.

Phee, later in a text message to the media, confirmed that the missing Mohd Haziq Mohd Tarmizi, 17, has died.

He said the Malaysian Embassy had been informed about this incident.
