THE ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ mobile app has now been launched to make it easier for users to obtain comprehensive information on sports facilities in Penang.

Penang caretaker Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee said the ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ web portal has been developed in 2014, while the mobile app for Android smartphone users is now being launched.

“I believe that the ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ mobile app will benefit both the locals and visitors with its launch. Both Penangites and tourists can identify and locate the sports facilities which are available in Penang more easily.

“The comprehensive mobile app and web portal contain information such as location, contact details, layer list, legend, base map gallery, query, and other functions to assist users.

“A total of 545 sports facilities have been listed in the ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ mobile app and web portal. The facilities are for 52 types of sports which include aquatic, weightlifting, badminton, cycling, riding, bodybuilding, netball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, beach volleyball, bowling, cricket, fencing, floorball, futsal, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, golf, gymnasiums, hockey, judo, kabaddi, canoeing, karate-do, kayaking, lawn bowl, archery, wushu, sepak takraw, and others.

Soon said the information regarding the sports facilities was provided by the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP), Penang Youth and Sports Department (JSBNPP), Penang Stadium and Open Spaces Corporation (PSDKLPP), state local governments, and the five district offices in Penang.

“We thank the Geospatial Information Management Unit under the state Communication and Information Technology Division for its effort in producing the ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ mobile app and web portal.

“Penang has always been advocating smart initiatives. These smart initiatives (the development of the ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ mobile app and web portal) can attract and encourage more people to engage in sports. They are also for promoting sports tourism,” he added.

MSNPP director Harry Chai said the information in the ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ mobile app and web portal would be updated from time to time.

PSDKLPP executive director Rashidah Jalaludin lauded the initiatives, adding that all information about the sports facilities in Penang could be obtained through a single platform.

Meanwhile, Information Technology assistant officer Noorhaizarinie Zaini said users can download the ‘Penang Sports Facilities’ mobile app from the Google Play Store.

“We are working on the mobile app for iOS users,” she said.
