THE latest container art installation of the first-ever Penang International Container Art Festival (PICAF) 2020 was unveiled at Central Island Park, Aspen Vision City.

State Tourism Development, Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the container art marked the fourth PICAF installation in Penang.

“The container art installation features murals by Canadian artist Emmanuel Jarus and Kuala Lumpur-based artist Caryn Koh.

“The first mural, known as the ‘Offshore’ by Emmanuel, depicts a local fisherman getting ready to fish in the straits that connects the island and the mainland.

“The mural is an attempt to illustrate how everyone can contribute to and support the society.

“Meanwhile, the second mural known as ‘Connection’ by Caryn (on the same installation site) depicts her close friend, sitting cosily while grasping and looking down on a braided rope,” Yeoh said in his speech before launching the latest container art installation on Feb 8.

Yeoh welcomed the public to spend time and enjoy the art features, including the other PICAF installations.

“The public can capture fascinating images of the artworks and keep them as mementos,” he added.

Also present was Bukit Tambun assemblyman Goh Choon Aik.

The much-buzzed-about festival features five pop-up container art installations at five different venues. They are located in Kampung Terang in Balik Pulau, Prangin Mall (George Town), Karpal Singh Drive (Jelutong), Aspen Vision City (Batu Kawan) and the yet-to-be-unveiled container art at Dataran Pemuda Merdeka in Butterworth.

The murals were drawn by 12 international and local artists.

Each installation depicts Penang’s identities and characteristics to create a sense of belonging amongst the communities as well as visitors.

PICAF 2020, which started in December last year, would be held until the end of May this year.

The event is organised by Can Can Public Art and endorsed by the Penang government.
