TM aims for 85% fibre coverage in Penang by the end of 2022

TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd today announced its aspirations of realising 85% fibre coverage in Penang by the end of 2022, its chief executive officer Imri Mokhtar said.

 

It is learnt that as of August this year, a total of 464,738 (81%) premises out of 568,110 households have been covered with fibre networks.

 

“We are committed to achieving our target by the end of this year as we view fibre connectivity as the leading component for fast and cost-effective 5G infrastructure.

 

“Penang as a major player pioneering in various industries will be able to further accelerate its high-performing standards with improved and wider fibre connectivity.

 

“TM will continue to expand the digital reach in Penang because this state is full of exciting smart initiatives, be it from smart city, smart industry, smart agriculture, smart healthcare and smart education.

 

“These are areas we hope to collaborate closer with the state government for a sustainable future for our next generation,” Imri said during his courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at his office in Komtar today.

 

Meanwhile, moving forward, Chow expressed his hopes that Penang would collaborate with TM on various efforts to strengthen the state’s smart industry areas to cater to the advancement the world is experiencing.

 

Chow and Imri also discussed other potential collaborations, such as TM’s collaboration insights on the state’s government-linked company (GLC) initiatives and other relevant agencies, smart partnership and infra deployment in developing the Penang Technology Park and the proposed idea of moving the state’s Disaster Recovery Centre in Kepala Batas to TM Cloud Services.

 

Also present during the courtesy call was state Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari.
