REGARDED as the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia, the St George’s Church in George Town turns 204 this year and has been declared a Pro-Cathedral.

A Pro-Cathedral is a parish church that is temporarily serving as the Cathedral or Co-Cathedral of a diocese or has the same function in a Catholic missionary jurisdiction that is not yet entitled to a proper Cathedral, such as an apostolic prefecture or apostolic administration.

In addition, the church also held a carnival earlier, where food stalls were set up selling delicious local delicacies, as well as live performances by the church members.

It is learned that the initiative was to raise funds for six benefactors, namely St Nicholas Home Penang, Rumah Victory Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Rumah Shalom Youth Hostel, Salvation Army Penang Children’s Home, Ramakrishna Ashrama and the Charis Hospice Penang.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was present earlier at the carnival, said he was grateful and honoured to be part of the church’s momentous achievements.

He thanked the church for playing an integral part in the state’s development over the years.

“This declaration recognises the significant role that your religious institution has played in our community, not only in Penang but throughout the northern region of our country.

“It also demonstrates the hard work and dedication of your predecessors that have made all of these achievements possible.

“I must say, your church has come a long way since it was built and consecrated in 1819, making it the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia.

“Nationally, I understand it was gazetted as a historical site in 1996 and was named one of Malaysia’s National Heritage Treasures in 2007.

“After 204 years, the church continues to stand strong and vibrant, serving not only its parishioners but also the community.

“This year, Penang conferred the Penang Centennial Excellence Award to St George’s Church in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the development of our state.

“Congratulations once again for achieving these milestones and of course, all the very best with your fundraising initiative through this carnival today,” Chow said in his speech during the St George’s Church carnival to mark the church’s 204th anniversary and declaration as a Pro-Cathedral at the church premises in George Town today.

Some 200 parishioners participated in the special service, which was celebrated from 3pm to 5pm, followed by the carnival, which started at 5pm and is expected to end at 9pm.

Also present were Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying, Pulau Tikus assemblyman Chris Lee, Bishop of the Diocese of West Malaysia Right Reverend Dr Stephen Abbarow and Suffragan Bishop of the northern region Right Reverend Dr Stephen Soe.
