PENANG’s true strength lies in the unity and diversity of its people, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow at the Penanglang Community Day (PCD) 2025 celebration.

“Even though we come from different backgrounds, our differences make us stronger, not weaker,” Chow said.

He paid tribute to Penang’s rich multicultural fabric, which includes Hokkien, Malay, Indian, Jawi Peranakan, Indian Muslim, Sikh, and many other heritage groups.

The event also marked a significant milestone for the Penang Walkabout group, with approximately 114,400 members now on its social media platforms.

Chow thanked the community leaders and volunteers, including Village Community Management Council (MPKK) members, for their hard work in bringing positive change to the community.

He stressed the importance of preserving Penang’s cultural heritage for future generations.

“We must make sure our children inherit not just buildings and places, but also the values, stories, and traditions that define us,” he said.

Chow also praised the efforts of relevant groups like George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHI), the Penang Heritage Trust, and Penang Walkabout in their work for safeguarding local heritage.

The PCD 2025 continues until tomorrow, featuring cultural shows, exhibitions, and fun booths.

Former Chief Minister and Air Putih assemblyman Lim Guan Eng, who was also present, noted that the Peranakan community in Penang is rich in both lifestyle and history, and has long contributed to the state’s development.

“The unique mix of cultures from the old Straits Settlements is what makes Penang special,” he said.

He also hoped for a permanent Peranakan display for public education and appreciation.

Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh echoed similar sentiments, highlighting that Penang’s diversity and multiculturalism give the state its own unique charm.

Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng thanked the Penang Walkabout group and event organisers for choosing Sunshine Central as the venue. He also thanked Datuk Hwang Thean Long, managing director of Suiwah Corporation, for supporting the event.

“This two-day celebration brings together people from all walks of life, social media influencers, food lovers, entrepreneurs, artists, families, and friends to mark the event in a meaningful way,” he said.
