CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow today emphasised the need to establish the Ulu Muda Basin Authority (UMBA) to oversee Ulu Muda as the most crucial water basin.

“Previously, the state, in collaboration with the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), has advocated for the establishment of UMBA.

“In fact, I have discussed this matter with three Environment Ministers and two Kedah Menteris Besar. I have also raised the topic in several meetings in Putrajaya.

“I believe UMBA can play its role effectively in managing the raw water source from Ulu Muda, ensuring a stable supply for Penang, Kedah, and Perlis, once formed,” he responded to a journalist’s question about allegations of logging activities causing mud pollution in Tasik Muda.

Regarding the denial from Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor about logging involvement, Chow expressed the state’s interest in knowing the exact reasons behind it.

Chow also voiced concern that the water supply in Penang could be impacted by silt pollution in Tasik Muda.
