Welfare association gets a shot in the arm

THE Penang government has allocated RM100,000 in support of the Nibong Tebal Welfare Association’s effort to set up its new premises in Nibong Tebal.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the welfare association had been providing a place for the management of remains of non-Muslims in Nibong Tebal since 1974.

“The association was offering its services in its current premises under a temporary occupation license.

“However, the association has been asked to vacate its building and premises to make way for a road infrastructure project early this year.

“In February this year, the Penang government received an appeal by the association expressing its interest in acquiring a new site and setting up a new building.

“The welfare association wants to continue providing its services to the people,” Chow told a press conference in Komtar today.

Chow said the estimated cost of acquiring the land and constructing the building was RM1.7 million.

“We understand that the association was in the process of raising funds for the purpose.

“Jawi assemblyman Jason H’ng has appealed for the order to vacate the current site to be postponed, pending the setting up of the new premises,” he said.

Chow hoped that the state’s contribution could provide some financial relief for the association.

Also present were Penang Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, H’ng, Nibong Tebal Welfare Association chairman Datuk Goh Boon Koon, the association’s vice-chairman Tan Swee Beng, secretary Lee Song Seah, treasurer Khor Chin Heng, and adviser Tan Chik Cheng.
