PENANG should improve the proposed Mutiara Line LRT sea-crossing link, strengthen welfare aid notifications and address maintenance issues at strata housing schemes, says Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng (PH-Pengkalan Kota).
Taking part in the State Legislative Assembly debate today, Wong proposed adding pedestrian and cycling lanes, viewing platforms and recreational spaces to the link between Macallum station and Penang Sentral to make it a tourism attraction.
“Similar developments in China had become popular attractions and could also benefit nearby traders and small businesses,” he said.
On the i-Sejahtera welfare programme, Wong suggested sending recipients official notification letters after payments are credited, similar to the federal Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) system.
Wong also raised concerns over maintenance charges at medium-cost flats, citing an example of residents paying RM285 a month, including sinking fund contributions.
He said it was unfair for residents who paid on time to bear the burden of those who defaulted, urging the Commissioner of Buildings (COB) to monitor joint management bodies and management corporations more closely and ensure action was taken against defaulters under the Strata Management Act 2013.
He also called on the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to review public parking arrangements outside pre-war houses in George Town.
“Some parking spaces affected residents’ access to their homes, particularly the elderly and wheelchair users,” he added.
He suggested introducing alternating parking spaces or removing selected bays to provide better access, adding that the council should conduct on-site assessments before making changes.
