Youth camp nurtures sustainable mind

A TOTAL of 27 participants aged of 14 to 18 from secondary schools in Penang and Kedah attended the Youth Camp 2017 organised by Penang Green Council. This is the third year the camp is being held.

Themed “Renewable Energy: Power of Nature”, it was held on Nov 4-5 at the Water Sports Activities Center Tanjung Bungah, Penang.

The camp is designed specifically to empower students to think critically and prepare them for amore sustainable future.

It aims to emphasise on the vital roles of youth in environmental conservation focusing on renewable energy.

“During the sharing session, I was excited about the ideas that were presented by the participants as it was very interesting and impressive. Congratulations and thank you to PGC for giving participants the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions,” said Loo Qiu Xi from Solarvest Energy Sdn Bhd who shared about renewable energy and its importance to the environment.

Besides that, Lai Chee Hui from Water Watch Penang was invited to share about climate change mitigation.

Apart from sharing sessions, there were several interesting activities held throughout the camp such as DIY solar oven using recyclable materials, Explorace Energy, and environmental movie screening.

Participants are given the opportunity to present their ideas about models using renewable energy.

Through the activities, the participants have acquired a handful of useful information on renewable energy in Malaysia as well as its importance to the environment.

Youth Camp is also supported by a group of volunteers from Universiti Sains Malaysia Penang. Special thanks to Solarvest Energy Sdn Bhd, Water Watch Penang, and everyone who helped to made this camp a fruitful and successful event.

Penang Green Council (PGC) is a non-profit governmental organisation which nurture and promote environmental awareness and education in Penang. PGC organise series of environmental camps and workshops such as environmental themed Green Camps and workshops, Youth Camp, and Consumerism Thinking Cap workshop as part of community outreach efforts.
