CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow reaffirmed the state government’s steadfast commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people, assuring that Penang’s signature i-Sejahtera programme will continue as part of its ongoing social support initiatives.

Speaking at the Perai state constituency Deepavali Open House at the Chai Leng Park Multipurpose Hall this evening, Chow said that as the state government prepares to table the upcoming Penang Budget later this month, it remains focused on sustaining key welfare programmes that directly benefit the people.

“We will continue to prioritise the welfare of our people through i-Sejahtera and other assistance programmes,” Chow affirmed to loud applause.

He said the state government remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind as Penang continues to advance towards its Penang2030 vision of building a Family-Focused, Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation.

Chow also extended warm greetings to the Hindu community across the state, especially those in Perai, on the joyous occasion of Deepavali.

“May this meaningful festival bring light, happiness, and renewed hope to all of us.

“I am delighted to celebrate this evening together in the spirit of harmony and unity that defines our community,” he said.

Chow commended Perai assemblyman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu and his team for successfully organising the annual Deepavali celebration, which drew a lively crowd from across Seberang Perai.

“Penang’s strength lies in our unity amid diversity.

“People of different races and faiths live together in mutual respect and understanding, and this is the true essence of Penang that we must preserve and pass on to future generations,” Chow said.

He highlighted that Perai continues to witness encouraging growth, thanks to the close cooperation between the state government, local agencies, and the community.

Among the major initiatives are several public infrastructure upgrades funded by the Local Government Development Ministry (KPKT) worth more than RM18 million, including market improvements, new drainage systems, park maintenance, and public safety facilities.

In addition, ongoing strata housing maintenance and community facility upgrades amounting to over RM20 million are being implemented to ensure safer and more sustainable living environments.

At the grassroots level, the Perai service centre continues to champion community welfare programmes such as Kasih Prihatin, Sayangi Pelajar Perai, and various gotong-royong and unity initiatives that strengthen social bonds among residents.

“These efforts truly embody the spirit of Penang2030, making our state a more liveable, inclusive, and prosperous home for all,” Chow concluded.

Earlier, Sundarajoo expressed his gratitude to the people of Perai for their continued trust and support, marking his third Deepavali celebration with his constituents since assuming office as an executive councillor.

“It is a great feeling to see the crowd growing every year as it reflects the love and connection we share. I will continue to do my best and serve as long as I am here,” he said with heartfelt appreciation.

Also present during the event were former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng and Chow’s wife Tan Lean Kee, and several other state assemblymen from the island and mainland.
