Five preschool teachers picked to undergo Cambridge course

FIVE preschool teachers from five different schools (each district in Penang) have been selected to undergo a nine-month Cambridge Assessment English’s professional development course – Certificate in English Language Teaching- Primary (CELT-P) which will be conducted by GPEX Central Sdn Bhd.

This programme is a joint collaboration between the Penang Education Council (PEC) and GPEX Central under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project to enhance pre-school teachers’ teaching skills.

GPEX Central managing director Bryan Teow said that in return of the scholarship awarded, the teachers who have been selected, need to teach Community Cambridge English Classes in their respective pre-schools for one year for pupils from low-income group.

“Teachers are selected from five districts with one teacher from each district coming from schools that are facing challenges in helping learners to attain adequate proficiency in English.

“GPEX will be sponsoring 250 copies of imported learning materials from Cambridge University Press for the community English classes.

“Preschool pupils who have attained sufficient proficiency will also be sponsored by GPEX and the corporate sector to sit for Cambridge English Qualifications- Pre A1 Starters at the end of the course,” Teow said during the MoU signing ceremony between the PEC and GPEX Central today.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy and the regional manager education-Asean, Cambridge University Press Malaysia Kanjna Paranthaman.

“The collaboration will be a significant milestone for government preschools in upskilling the English language teachers,” said Ramasamy.

Also present were PEC manager Fatimah Hassan, Penang State Education Department principal assistant director for English Language Zulkifli Ahmad and representatives from Penang State Education Department.
