THE Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) will be assessing its damaged sewage pipe near the Jalan Sungai-Jalan Sungai Pinang junction in the next few days.

Penang Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and IWK went to the site yesterday afternoon (Sept 27) to investigate after they received reports of a sinkhole near the road junction.

“It was affirmed that the sinkhole was caused by an IWK sewage pipe leak. The sinkhole is partially filled and blocked by sewage from the pipe, hence, IWK could not gauge the damages until a bypass has been done.

“The bypass can be done in a few days,” he said in a short statement today.

The affected section has been closed to traffic to facilitate the repair works.

A section of the affected area has been closed to traffic.
