SEBERANG Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) has installed sensors at 12 hotspots in the mainland to monitor water levels in the event of flooding.

Penang Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said such an initiative was to reduce the manpower and costs needed when water levels rose during downpour.

According to him, the MPSP personnel are able to monitor the situation in real time through the flash flood alerts.

“They can monitor water levels in real time before being alerted that the danger levels are reached,” Jagdeep told a press conference today.

Jagdeep and Rozali during a press conference.

“A notification will be sent to them before the council personnel are deployed to the scene. This will reduce the impact of flash floods in the low-lying areas.”

MPSP, the largest municipality in the country, is working towards achieving the state’s vision of becoming a ‘smart city’. Recently, it also launched the first ‘smart’ bus stop in the state.

Also present was MPSP president Datuk Rozali Mohamud.

Rozali also concurred with Jagdeep, stating that it was a move to ensure an efficient system as MPSP needed to move forward in line with the state’s aspiration of achieving a ‘smart city.’
