Open investigation file on Pulau Burung landfill incident, exco man tells state DoE

THE Penang Department of Environment (DoE) has been instructed by the Penang government to open an investigation file on the incident at the Pulau Burung landfill here.

In a short statement, Penang Welfare and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said he has instructed the department to open an investigation file regarding the matter.

It was reported that the state DoE had received a complaint in connection with the release of leachate from a retention pond at a solid waste disposal landfill in Pulau Burung. It is learnt that the residents nearby alerted the authorities after they found black-coloured water flowing into the mangrove area before making its way into the sea.

Phee, who is currently attending the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction 2022, said he would study the result of the probe when it is completed. The investigation is expected to be completed within two weeks.
