THE Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) Penang Branch will organise its inaugural MMA Penang Charity Cycling 2026 to raise awareness of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and funds for the National Autism Society of Malaysia (Nasom) and other autism-related organisations.

Themed ‘Pedal for a Purpose – Ride for Autism’, the event will take place on July 5, starting at 7am from Gurney Paragon Mall. Participants will embark on a 24km scenic coastal ride, which will bring together healthcare professionals, corporate partners, cycling enthusiasts, non-governmental organisations, families and members of the public from across the region.

State EXCO for Youth, Sports and Health Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the event serves a purpose beyond cycling.

“It aims to raise awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder, while promoting healthy living, inclusivity and stronger community engagement,” he said.

Gooi noted that ASD is a developmental condition that affects individuals in different ways. In recent years, public awareness of autism has grown significantly, with more families seeking early diagnosis, intervention and support.

While describing the progress as encouraging, he said more needs to be done to build a society that is fully understanding, accepting and inclusive of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Gooi says he strongly supports events that combine public health promotion with community engagement.

“For many families, the journey of raising a child with autism comes with unique challenges. As a community, we must continue to foster greater awareness and understanding so that individuals with autism are given every opportunity to participate, contribute and thrive in society.

“That is why initiatives such as the MMA Penang Charity Cycling are so important. They provide a platform to educate the public, encourage meaningful conversations and strengthen support for autism-related causes, while at the same time promoting active and healthy lifestyles,” he said.

Dr Parmjit encourages everyone to sign up for the event.

MMA Penang chairman Datuk Dr Parmjit Singh, who is also the organising chairman, called on the public to support the event either by participating or sponsoring it.

“Although we’ve not set any target, we hope to draw as many riders and sponsors as possible,” he said.

Also present at the press conference were MMA Penang vice-chairman Dr Divagar Varatharaju, MMA Penang committee member Dr Jai Tejani, Howei representative Samuel Shee, Brompton Cycling representative Andy, Penang Adventurers’ Club representative Wong Pang Kong, and Nasom chairman Mano Gobindra Gandhi.
