THE Penang government is looking forward to officially incorporating the Pesta Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) into the state’s tourism calendar, further strengthening cultural ties between Penang and East Malaysia.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the close relationship between Sabah and Penang is reflected through the large Sabahan community living and working in the state.

Wong said the close relationship between Sabah and Penang is reflected through the large Sabahan community living and working in the state.

“This is mainly because many Sabahans live and work in Penang across various public and private sectors, including as doctors, nurses, police personnel, firefighters and professionals in other industries.

“There are also many Sabahan students in Penang pursuing their tertiary education.

“It is estimated that more than 10,000 Sabahans are currently working and residing in Penang,” he said in his speech before officiating the Penang Pesta Kaamatan 2026 celebration at Prangin Mall today.

Also present were Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) chief executive officer Datuk Ong Bee Leng, former Sabah chief minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, Persatuan Kebudayaan Kadazan Dusun Pulau Pinang (PKKDPP) chairlady Shereen Sherneys and PKKDPP advisor Jonathan Freddy P. Bagang.

Reflecting on his earlier involvement in organising Gawai and Kaamatan celebrations, Wong highlighted the importance of fostering stronger bonds between Penang and the people of Sabah and Sarawak.

“About 10 years ago, I was among the organisers working together with Sabahans and Sarawakians to hold the Gawai and Kaamatan festivals simultaneously.

“I still remember those memorable moments, as I also have many Sabahan friends.

“I believe we should continue to strengthen our ties with Sabahans and Sarawakians because they are part of one big Malaysian family.

“We are also connected through direct flights between Penang, Sabah and Sarawak, which continue to support and boost domestic tourism in the state,” he said.
