Penang’s creative scene is set to reach a new milestone with the launch of its first dedicated illustration festival, bringing together 80 to 100 Malaysian and international illustrators for a celebration of art, visual storytelling and creative expression.
The inaugural George Town Illustration Festival (GTIF) 2026 will be held on Nov 14 and 15 at Island 88 in Tanjung Tokong.
Jointly organised by Island 88 and JCO Creative Sdn Bhd, the two-day festival aims to establish Penang as a regional platform for contemporary illustration, offering artists opportunities to showcase their work, build professional networks and engage directly with the public.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the festival, themed ‘Beginning’, marked an important step in expanding the state’s creative landscape beyond its established reputation for heritage and cultural tourism.
“GTIF expands how the world sees Penang not only as a storehouse of heritage, but as a progressive, modern hub for contemporary visual art, illustration and visual storytelling.
“Illustration is a universal language. It communicates complex stories, sparks imagination and connects cultures across boundaries.
“By bringing together 80 to 100 Malaysian and international illustrators right here in Penang, GTIF 2026 creates a regional platform where visual artists can showcase their work, build professional networks and inspire the next generation of creative talents,” he said during a press conference in Komtar today.
Also present was Island 88 managing director Philip Law.
Wong said GTIF 2026 aligned with the state government’s vision of strengthening both cultural tourism and the creative economy by creating opportunities for local artists while enriching Penang’s tourism offerings.
“First, it provides tangible economic opportunities for local artists and emerging talents by offering them commercial exposure and direct access to global markets.
“Second, it enriches Penang’s tourism landscape. With an estimated attendance of 5,000 to 8,000 visitors over the two-day festival, GTIF 2026 is expected to attract a diverse audience, including cultural travellers, art collectors, families and young adults,” he said.
He added that the influx of visitors to Tanjung Tokong would also generate economic activity for businesses in the hospitality, retail and food and beverage (F&B) sectors.
Beyond showcasing artistic talent, Wong said the festival reflected Penang’s commitment to nurturing modern creative industries and building a sustainable ecosystem for artists to develop their careers.
“GTIF 2026 demonstrates that Penang is serious about nurturing modern creative industries.
“We want to show the world that our state is a home where creative talents can thrive, innovate and build sustainable careers,” he said.
