FOR 90 good years, the Penang Sports Club (PSC) has served as a sporting, recreational, and social institution, bringing generations together through sports, family activities, and community engagement.
To mark this momentous achievement, the club has planned a series of programmes and activities for a year, inviting the public to experience the environment and facilities at the club in a personal manner.
Running from June 15 this year to April 11, 2027, the anniversary celebrations carry the theme “90 Years of Sport, Community and Friendship”.
Located along Jalan Utama in George Town, the club offers a range of sporting activities, including badminton, cricket, tennis, football and hockey, alongside recreational facilities for its members.

Its facilities include 18 tennis courts, 12 omni-courts, two badminton courts, cricket, hockey and football fields, as well as a library, karaoke lounge and six food and beverage outlets.
PSC senior vice-president and organising chairman Kannan Srinivasaraghavan outlined the activities planned throughout the anniversary year during an interview with Buletin Mutiara on Oct 7 at his residence in George Town.

“It will span across the whole year.
“We will have an open day for the public, a jogathon, annual dinner, and all international events we are having will be in conjunction with the 90th anniversary celebration,” he said.
In June, the club held a competition to design a commemorative logo reflecting its 90-year heritage. The winning design, by Manogaran Muthu, was awarded on July 17.

The upcoming open day, scheduled for Oct 31 this year, will feature health talks, simultaneous chess tournaments, sports clinics and traditional Malaysian games, giving visitors an introduction to the club’s facilities and activities.
“We would like to focus a bit more on showing the public that we are not just a very elite sports club, but also do lots of social activities to serve the public as well,” Kannan said.
The club welcomes members of the public, including sports enthusiasts, to experience its facilities and activities, with the aim of promoting active living, sports participation, health awareness and community spirit.

Other events planned for the remainder of the year include a Food and Fun Fair for members and a dance extravaganza in November, followed by a New Year’s Eve dinner and dance in December.
Two major tournaments are also scheduled for April next year, namely the PSC International Soccer 7s Tournament and the PSC International Invitational Tournament (PSCIITT).
Reflecting on the club’s 90-year journey, Kannan highlighted its influence on younger generations, continued contributions to charitable causes, support for other clubs and the importance of members in sustaining its development.

He also said the club was considering introducing e-sports in the future to encourage younger members and their children to participate in club activities, although suitable infrastructure would need to be in place.
“We have thought about this so that some of our club members’ children can feel motivated to come, and something like e-sports can be introduced.
“For e-sports, we need to make sure we have the right infrastructure to make sure there’s no abuse of the internet and facility that we provide,” Kannan added.

Meanwhile, the club is planning to introduce a pickleball court, while a new sports building project is already underway. This development will include four badminton courts and a multipurpose hall on the ground floor.
As the Penang Sports Club marks its 90th anniversary, it aims to continue upgrading its facilities while preserving its sporting traditions and strengthening its role in the community for generations to come.
