THE 22nd Penang State Vasakhi Open House 2026 will take place at Jalan Padang Kota Lama on May 2, from 6pm to 11pm.

Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo called on all Penangites and visitors to join the celebration, which is jointly organised by Wadda Gurdwara Sahib George Town and Penang Harmony Corporation (Harmonico), with support from the state government.

The Tamil and Sikh communities will celebrate their New Year tomorrow (April 14). During the Tamil New Year, Hindus typically reflect on traditions, uphold values, safeguard rights and strengthen unity, while Sikhs celebrate Vasakhi to mark the founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.

“It’s an auspicious occasion for us, Sikhs, as we celebrate Vasakhi to commemorate the founding of the Khalsa. It is not only celebrated locally but also draws visitors from overseas,” Jagdeep said at the annexe of Wadda Gurdwara Sahib Penang.

Jagdeep added that the major renovation of the 125-year-old temple, one of the oldest in Southeast Asia, is expected to be completed by the end of June.

Also present were state executive councillor for Social Development, Welfare and non-Islamic Religious Affairs Lim Siew Khim, temple president Santokh Singh, Conservation and Restoration Committee co-chairman Datuk Malkit Singh; Kuala Lumpur Fundraising Dinner organising chairman Prof Datuk Ishwar Parhan, Harmonico general manager Paul Au, and Japanese couple Mr and Mrs Uetani Yashio.

Lim said the Penang State Vasakhi Open House promises a vibrant and inclusive celebration, featuring Punjabi and Sikh cultural performances, traditional music, as well as a wide array of Punjabi cuisine.

“The open house is a wonderful opportunity for the public to learn more about Sikh cultural practices, values and contributions to Malaysian society.

“Although small in number, the Sikh community in Penang has played a significant role in shaping the social and cultural fabric of our state. The Penang government will continue to support the community in flourishing and strengthening our bonds as a multicultural and harmonious society,” she said.

Lim also echoed an announcement by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow regarding a nominal quit rent fee of RM50 for all eligible non-Islamic houses of worship (RIBI) in Penang.

She urged RIBIs to submit their appeals via the Penang Land and Mines Office website as soon as possible to qualify for the reduction.

Lim further announced that applications for the Trust Fund / Special Allocation for Non-Islamic Houses of Worship (RIBI) 2026 will open from April 14 to May 15.

“RIBIs are required to update their information via the eRIBI system and submit applications through the portal. This grant aims to support the construction and maintenance of non-Islamic houses of worship across Penang,” she added.
