IMPRESSED by the rich cultures in Penang, Chile hopes to foster closer ties with the state.

The ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Chile to Malaysia Diego Velasco von Pilgrimm praised Penang for its cultures and heritage.

“There are various cultures here in Penang. The state is also home to the George Town Unesco World Heritage Sites.

“Today, we had the privilege to engage several youths during an engagement session at the Penang Digital Library. The engagement was fruitful, and we managed to exchange views.

The ambassador, together with his wife Dr Raden Ayu Ambara Baratawidjaja, paid a courtesy call on Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow in Komtar today. Also present was Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.

Diego spoke about Valparaíso, a major city in Chile; and another important city called Punta Arenas during the meeting.

He also mentioned that Malaysia mainly imports wine, seafood, as well as fresh and frozen fruits from Chile.

Diego thanked Penang for its hospitality. He presented Chow with several mementoes at the end of the meeting.

Chow handed him a book, entitled ‘Over Penang’, which features drone photographs of Penang; and another book, entitled ‘Simply Penang’, which offers an enchanting tapestry of colours, showing the state’s storied historical past and its multi-racial populace with its rich cultural and artistic heritage.
