THE Penang State Government, through the Penang Green Council (PGC), has rescheduled the distribution of reusable recycling bags under the No Single-Use Plastic (NSUP) campaign at the Chai Leng Park Wet Market in Perai. The event, originally set for Aug 2, will now take place on Aug 9 (Saturday) at 8.30am.

In a statement issued today, PGC said the change was necessary to ensure smoother coordination and encourage greater public participation. The council also apologised for any inconvenience caused.

However, the distribution at Bayan Baru Market will proceed as planned on Aug 3 (Sunday) at 8.30am. PGC aims to distribute 2,000 reusable bags at each of the two markets.

“The NSUP campaign is more than just a call to reduce plastic usage. It is a movement towards cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainable living in Penang. We encourage all members of the public to join us in this meaningful effort and collect their reusable bags during the distribution dates. Together, let us build a cleaner and greener Penang,” the statement read.

On July 18, state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, accompanied by PGC general manager Josephine Tan and her team, distributed reusable bags to state executive councillors, including Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, as part of the state’s ongoing green efforts.

Sundarajoo had announced that a total of 100,000 reusable bags will be distributed to the public in five phases, with 20,000 bags to be given out in each phase. The bags will be made available through the service centres of all state assemblymen across Penang, as well as at various public venues.

According to Tan, the initiative forms part of the ‘Penang No Plastic Bag Everyday Campaign 2025’, which will be fully implemented in September. A six-month educational enforcement period, running from March 1 to Aug 31, is currently underway for both businesses and the public to adapt to the new regulations.
