SINCE January 2025, construction and installation of the Quantum Thermal Pyrolysis Cracking (QTPC) system have been underway at two pig farms in Kampung Selamat, namely PU006 and PU015, as part of a pilot project to tackle waste management issues.
State Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Fahmi Zainol said that the Penang Veterinary Services Department (DVS) will monitor key environmental parameters, namely the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Ammoniacal Nitrogen (AN) for two weeks after the pilot is completed.
“The monitoring will assess the effectiveness of the QTPC system in managing waste.
“If the results are promising, this system will be extended to all pig farms in the area,” said Fahmi (PH – Pantai Jerejak) in his answer during an oral question during the State Legislative Assembly Sitting at the State Assembly Building in Light Street today.
He added DVS has set a deadline of June 1, 2025, for the implementation of the system at all 61 pig farms identified in the initiative.
Earlier, Mohd Sobri Saleh (PN – Permatang Berangan) questioned Fahmi on the continued pollution of Sungai Kereh, allegedly caused by improper disposal of pig waste.
He also sought clarity on the timeline for resolving this long-standing environmental issue.
In response, Fahmi explained that a previously proposed plan to transport pig waste from Kampung Selamat to a biogas facility in Valdor was scrapped due to the risk of spreading infectious diseases, either through the waste, transport vehicles, or workers involved in the relocation.
Following this development, the north Seberang Perai district Pig Farmers’ Association expressed interest in collaborating with HRBQ Tech Sdn. Bhd. to implement the QTPC system at all pig farms in the area through a phased approach.
“A meeting involving the company, DVS, and all pig farmers in Kampung Selamat was held on December 17, 2024, to gather feedback on the proposed treatment system,” Fahmi added.
The discussion led to the current pilot project at farms PU006 and PU015, marking a crucial step toward improving environmental practices in the local pig farming industry.
