YOUTH and sports enthusiasts in Taman Tun Sardon now have a better, safer, and higher-quality venue to play, following the official opening of their upgraded futsal court today.
The RM200,000 upgrading project, carried out under the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) initiative, was completed within two months and is now fully open for public use.
Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, who officiated the event, expressed her gratitude to all agencies involved, noting that the project came to fruition after local Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) officers requested assistance at her service centre last year.
“After a year of concerted effort with ICU, the Village Community Management Council (MPKK), and various stakeholders, we are thrilled to deliver this facility to the community.
“This is not just about playing sports. It provides a comfortable, quality space for our youth to spend their leisure time constructively while strengthening neighbourhood ties,” Tan said during the launch ceremony.
She added that the state government remains dedicated to upgrading public infrastructure across Seri Delima.
Several other recreational projects are underway this year, including new pickleball and sepak takraw courts, the new Taman Tun Sardon Community Hall (Dewan Balai Rakyat), as well as ongoing upgrading works at the Taman Tun Sardon Pavilion (Astaka).
Meanwhile, Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh highlighted the upcoming upgrading works for the nearby Gelanggang Sepak Takraw.
He highlighted that the project was funded through his own parliamentary constituency allocation to ensure residents have access to quality sports facilities.
The launch was held alongside the Program Senam Sihat MADANI Merdeka, Perasmian Gelanggang Futsal & Kejohanan Futsal Piala Parlimen Bukit Gelugor & Seri Delima 2026 at Gelanggang Futsal Blok AT, Taman Tun Sardon.
The half-day event featured aerobic workouts, health screenings, a lucky draw, and a youth futsal tournament.
The programme also formed part of a nationwide effort to set a record in the Malaysia Book of Records for simultaneous participation involving 1,099 National Information Dissemination Centres (Nadi). The initiative, which focused on Merdeka-themed fitness and wellness sessions, was aimed at uniting local communities in celebration of Malaysia’s National Month.
Also present were Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Visvenathan Tangavello and local community leaders.
