PENANG celebrated a golden double in the women’s foil individual event at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 after Rizzal Surayya and Oo Chin Yu secured gold and silver respectively at the Dewan Pusat Sukan, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), here.

The all-Penang final saw Surayya overcome teammate Chin Yu to claim the gold medal, while Chin Yu settled for silver.

Sarawak’s Bangai Juliet Judy took the bronze medal.

Penang fencing coach under the Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP), Ivy Cheah Hsiao Yong, 32, said she was delighted to see the team’s hopes of having two Penang fencers contest the final become a reality.

“During the pool rounds, after seeing the results, we realised that unfortunately, our two Penang fencers had already met in the Table of 16.

“But that also guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals, so that was good. This was what we hoped for both of them, Ellie and Surayya, to meet in the final, and that’s what we achieved today.

“So, I am really, really glad that it came true,” she said.

Ivy said both fencers had given their best throughout their preparations despite facing their own challenges, including not feeling well at times.

“They all gave their best. Despite not feeling so well and all that, it was not a problem. Each of them, of course, had their own challenges.

“But they did all they could during their preparation until today. After this, they need to rest and get ready for the next one. Hopefully, we can do our best again,” she said.

The coach also highlighted the significance of the achievement for both fencers, particularly Surayya, who is competing in her final SUKMA.

For Surayya, the victory marked her second SUKMA gold medal after she also emerged champion at the previous edition in Sarawak

“This is her second gold medal at SUKMA. She also won gold at the previous SUKMA in Sarawak.

“But this is her last SUKMA, unfortunately, so it is good that she is going out with a bang,” Ivy said.

Meanwhile, the silver medal marked an impressive SUKMA debut for Chin Yu.

“It is Ellie’s first SUKMA, so it is a good show of performance from Ellie since it is her first time getting there,” she added.

With the individual event now concluded, Ivy said the team would turn its attention to the women’s foil team event, with Penang hoping to maintain its strong showing in the competition.

The fencing competition is being held at the Dewan Pusat Sukan, UiTM, Shah Alam, as part of SUKMA 2026.
