A TOTAL of 136 schools across Penang have been equipped with MakerLab facilities to enhance practical STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, says Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo today.

Jagdeep Singh (PH-Datok Keramat), who made the announcement during his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly, said the initiative aims to cultivate creativity and problem-solving skills among students, providing innovation spaces in schools with modern tools such as 3D printers and robotics kits. Industry professionals also mentor students as part of the programme.

“The Penang Science Cluster, through MakerLab, strengthens the ecosystem for nurturing young talent, ensuring students are well-prepared for the technological workforce of the future,” he said.

Jagdeep Singh highlighted that human capital development in the digital age faces significant challenges. Although nationwide interest in STEM streams has increased, from 45.73% in 2023 to 50.83% in 2024, interest in pure science remains low, falling short of the targeted 60:40 ratio between science and arts streams.

To address this, the state government has implemented the Technical Skill Learning (TSL) programme for upper secondary students, a pre-Industry Academy initiative integrating the National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) syllabus and accreditation from the Department of Skills Development (JPK).

The two-year programme exposes students early to industry-based hands-on training, improving employability and providing B40 students with opportunities to earn an income through a work-study model.

Graduates may continue to the Industry Academy programme and receive apprenticeship training while pursuing the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) at centres such as the Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC).

Jagdeep Singh also highlighted Penang’s growing international and local collaborations. Through InvestPenang, the state government promotes high-income job opportunities, encourages multinational companies to utilise local products and services, and supports SMEs in expanding their operations.

He noted the success of initiatives such as Incubation Space @GBS, which in its first year hosted seven local companies, including Channel Microsystems, Filpal, and Silicon X, contributing to world-class AI memory and chip innovations under the “Made by Malaysia” brand.

The launch of PSD@5KM+ in 2024 also saw the number of IC design companies in Penang more than double, establishing the state as Malaysia’s largest IC design cluster.

On future strategy, Jagdeep Singh said Penang has already formulated the Penang STEM Talent Blueprint, launched in 2024, as a long-term plan to nurture a high-skilled workforce in AI, data, and digital technologies, aligned with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and the National Semiconductor Strategy.

“Penang’s future shines brightly, powered by knowledge, skills, and the capacity of its leaders and citizens to embrace the era of technology and innovation. I am confident that Penang will continue to excel as a world-class technology hub,” he concluded.
