THE highly anticipated Penang Yosakoi Parade 2026 is set to return on June 27 and 28, bringing a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture, dance and international friendship to the Esplanade in Penang.

Widely regarded as Southeast Asia’s largest Yosakoi parade, the two-day festival will begin daily from 5pm onwards, featuring dazzling performances, cultural showcases and exciting entertainment for visitors of all ages.

Yosakoi, which means “come at night” in the Kochi dialect of Japan’s Shikoku Island, is a unique dance festival that combines traditional Japanese elements with modern music and choreography.

While the original Yosakoi Festival in Japan drew inspiration from Brazil’s Carnival, Penang’s version has evolved into a distinctive fusion of Japanese and Malaysian cultures.

The festival has become renowned for its energetic performances, creative choreography and colourful costumes presented by local and international teams, making it one of the largest Yosakoi celebrations outside Japan.

Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said this year’s event marks a significant milestone as the Penang Yosakoi Parade enters its 11th year, ushering in a second decade of promoting friendship, creativity and cultural exchange between Japan and Malaysia.

“What started as a cultural initiative has grown into one of the most important Yosakoi events outside Japan.

“Today, as Yosakoi continues to gain popularity across Southeast Asia, with new events emerging in countries such as Singapore and beyond, Penang Yosakoi Parade remains widely recognised as the most authentic and largest Yosakoi event in the region.

“More importantly, it has become a respected platform for cultural exchange and artistic collaboration between Japan and Malaysia,” Wong said during a press conference at Komtar today.

Also present were Penang Yosakoi Parade organising chairlady and Pink Hibiscus president Emi Yamazaki, Pink Hibiscus vice-president and Miss Yosakoi 2020 Nathalie Hong, Miss Yosakoi 2026 Wan Nurthaqifah Kaisyah Ghazali, Miss Yosakoi 2025 Rian Chong, Coscon president Charles Ang and Brewspark Technologies Group president Dr Kazuki Foo.

Wong said Penang is no longer merely hosting a Japanese cultural event but is instead serving as a living bridge between two nations.

“We are creating a living bridge between Japan and Malaysia, where tradition, creativity and friendship come together. This year, we are especially honoured to receive recognition from Kochi Prefecture, the birthplace of Yosakoi.

“In recognition of the dedication and efforts invested over the past decade, the Governor of Kochi has granted Penang Yosakoi Parade the authority to present a special Governor’s Award to one participating team in Malaysia,” he said.

According to Wong, the honour reflects the trust and confidence placed in Penang by the birthplace of Yosakoi.

“It is also a testament to the dedication and passion of everyone who has contributed to building this event into what it is today,” he added.

Among the major highlights of this year’s festival is the highly anticipated Hatsune Miku MMD Concert, which has already generated significant excitement across the region.

Wong revealed that visitors from Thailand, Hong Kong, China and Singapore have confirmed their attendance specifically for the concert.

“The popularity of Hatsune Miku demonstrates how Japanese digital culture continues to inspire audiences across borders and generations.

“We are proud that Penang has become a destination where fans from around Asia can gather to celebrate this unique form of creative expression,” he said.

The festivities will culminate in what organisers hope will be the region’s largest outdoor anime and Vocaloid dance party.
